5510 Canyoneering Shoes
By NathanE
It was raining and snowing the whole time. Without these shoes, I wouldn't have done been able to master the Zion National Park technical trails. The grip on the bottom is AMAZING!

5These boots rock!
By Austin Forsyth
These boots are specifically for canyoneering, that being hiking (usually down) mountain rivers without the benefit of a trail. As such, you need a shoe that will grip wet rock when you jump onto it.

As a kid, I skittered over granite barefoot in the Stanislaus, and it took a lot of patience and a lot of falling. These boots made me bloody Spidey-like in my ability to jump where I wanted and land where I wanted to, which is essential to avoid falling ten feet into a roiling river.

I consistently underestimated the boots on our last trip to the Little Kern. One note: be careful when there is sand on the bottom of the boots. Usually that would be a duh moment, but these boots are so good I forgot moments like those once or twice. If you need the ability to jump and land on granite, be it dry, wet, semi-submerged or even underwater and moderately algae-infested, then this is your boot.

A perfectly placed grommet on the inside drains the boot, but there will be times when rocks get in. Unavoidable. Use 2mm neoprene socks over your triathalon wetsuit and you're set.

Note that the 2 designation is from a redesign of the heel, which made it much better than the previous version -- our Fearless Leader had the original of these boots from twelve years ago, and the heel came off after 8 of these trips in that period. His son had a professional version of these boots, and though I loved mine he was doing things I could not believe in those boots.

5Great boot - get yourself some neoprene socks and it works great
By Chad
This is a great boot for hiking where water crossings are required. I'd wear them kayaking too but there's no way they'd fit in my narrow kayak. A word of advice is to wear them with a set of neoprene socks. I pair them with a 5mm sock and it prevents all rubbing/pinching/etc. With this combo there were times hiking through water (up over the top) when I actually had to check and see if my foot even got wet. The sock makes the difference though not only in thermal capacity and waterproofing, but fit as well. Not having actual laces, the boot secures with a "ski boot" type strap system that can either leave room for play (ouch blisters) or be too constricting as your foot swells during a day hike. Wasn't a huge fan of the yellow color and would have preferred an alternate choice as brand new, you could probably flag down an airplane with them right out of the box. I actually walked through some muddy water during my first wear to dull them down a little.

Bottom line: If you know you're not going to be in water, go with a normal hiking boot. If you think there may be water crossings or run the risk of cold water exposure, then this is the boot for you.
